Diet and Behavior.

The European bass hunts equally during the day and at night, preying on small fish (including pelagic species like sardines, sprats, and sand smelts) as well as sand eels, squid, and various crustaceans (such as crabs, etc.). Large fish exceeding 4 kg (8.8 lb) tend to be predominantly nocturnal hunters. They spawn between February and June, primarily in coastal areas. As fry, they are pelagic, but as they mature, they transition into estuaries, where they reside for one to two years.
