The Review.

I did a review on these lures back in October 2024, and in that review, I mentioned I got back into lure fishing for bass in May 2024. I had bought myself some new lures, including the Savage Gear Surfseekers, but for some reason, and still to this day, this has been my nemesis lure; I cannot catch anything with it.
I do like fishing with metal lures, and it led me to finding Wayne Morgan and his YouTube channel, Angling Addict 75 here. He had a video named "Is the Seeker Finished?" and was showing off the Slingshot Surface Iron. He was catching bass on it, and he also had an online shop called Lures Edge where he was selling these lures, so I decided to order some.
As in the image above, the Surface irons come in 6 different colors: Dark Knight, Chrome, Red Baron, Fusilier, Sardine, and Mint Glow. Weights available are 9g, 17g, and 26g, in each color. They are a 3-sided wedge-shaped lure and come with a treble hook and a split ring top. They have 3 slots on the top of the lure, which give off vibrations when retrieved in the water.
I started using the 9g ones first (tip: attach it to the lure eye and not the split ring; this lets the ring rattle when retrieving the lure). I attached the chrome version, and after a few casts, I hooked a small schoolie. I was ecstatic as I had caught one, my first of 2024. I wanted to try out the different colors and sizes. I caught 5 schoolies that day; I was chuffed.
Over the next few sessions, I was catching bass but still schoolies. I was catching now using the 17g version, as I was hoping to get a bigger bass with a bigger lure. The Red version was catching the most, followed by the Chrome and Mint ones. These lures cast a good distance, even the 9g ones, but sometimes I felt I could do with a bit more distance.

I hadn't tried the 26g version, so I ordered some; boy, don't these fly! You can throw them into a strong wind, and the braid screams off. I got to my estuary mark; I wanted to fish an hour of the ebb to low and fish the start of the flood. Already, some fish were splashing and a few gulls were diving. I put on a surface lure but couldn't get the distance, so out came a new surface iron 26g chrome. I clipped it on and cast it. It didn't take long, and I had a few bass on the bank, the lure working great. I switched over to the Red Baron and didn't get a touch. I re-clipped on the chrome and got hit immediately; this one coughed up a couple of baitfish the same size as the lure; match the hatch they say!!!
I had been watching a group of birds moving up along the estuary heading my way. They were intensely diving on a baitfish shoal, and for certain, the bass were pushing them along. They arrived in casting distance; in the next 10 casts, I had 10 bass. It was insane; this lure was amazing. It was a red-letter day for me; I had 30 bass in 2-3 hours. Nothing massive; most were in the 20-30 cm range, the best being a 38cm.
The Slingshot Surface Iron is a fantastic metal lure that you can fish sub-surface or deeper, depending on retrieve speed and rod position. It caught me 90% of the bass in 2024, on these lures, and I always carry some. The largest bass I caught was a 44 cm until the 16-11-24 when I caught a new PG 60 cm on a Surface Iron 17 g Chrome
Conclusion.

In a following session, I was trying out my new Apia Art Magic rod in the same place, but the water was cloudy. I was getting a fantastic distance with these lures. Although the water was murky, it was flashing well. I soon lost a schoolie, then a nice mackerel hit the same lure. A while later, I christened my new rod with a decent 44cm bass taken on the chrome surface iron 26g. This was the biggest bass so far with a surface iron.

The Slingshot Surface Irons are available through Lures Edge's online shop here for £8.99. If you enter (KERNOWBASS10), you can get 10% off these and anything else from the Lures Edge store. Also, here is Wayne's video here using the Surface Irons.
